WEBPosted February 9, 2012. I just tested using 100 1/2 inch lead ball media vs 95 nickels and 25 quarters (they took up about the same volume) the lead ball media bp was a little faster. It was milled for six hours. Although neither where clumping to badly the sides of the drum with the nickels where cleaner than the lead ball media drum.

WEBDec 11, 2019 · First off: NC is fairly insensitive to ignition. If we can ball mill black powder dry, why not NC? The problem is that NC is also very strong and flexible, quite undesirable properties for grinding. So ball milling with lead is probably going to be slow, and with heavy contamination. Brass or copper media (also safe for BP) might work better.

The potassium nitrate grinds better with the larger 1/2" media. The sweet spot for charcoal in my rudimentary testing was 5/16" diameter.

WEBJun 3, 2008 · Blast, the three pound ubiquitous ball mill in your link requires HUNDREDS of 1/2" balls to be effective. Ball mill media is one of the big headaches of this hobby. You either pay through the nose, labor long and hard cutting your own, or both. I'd skip the lead balls personally. I think a better media is a brass bar, cut into segments.

Using a rock tumbler, you can make black powder faster by milling the charcoal and potassium nitrate separately. 3 component milling takes much longer to make good powder.
